2015-08-25

Kostrzyn nad Odrą is a town in the Lubuskie Province, Gorzów County, covering an area of 4,617 hectares, inhabited by 18,500 residents. It is located near the mouth of Warta entering the Oder, in the western part of the Gorzów basin, bordering with Germany. In terms of administration, it is a separate town in the Lubuskie Province and belongs to the county of Gorzów. Its geographical coordinates are 52°35' North latitude and 14°40' East longitude. Within the historical boundaries of the city there are areas situated between Warta and the Oder, and modern architecture stretches on the right bank of Warta. From the north, the town borders with the municipalities of Boleszkowice and Dębno, from the east with the municipality of Witnica, from the south with the municipalities of Słońsk and Górzyca, and from the west – via the Oder – with the German district Märkisch-Oderland, situated in the state of Brandenburg.

The geographical location implying the transportation accessibility of Kostrzyn is no doubt one of its greatest strengths. The city is only 70 km from Berlin. Here, on the Oder and Warta, important roads and railway routes intersect. The railway lines connect Kostrzyn directly with Szczecin, Wrocław, Katowice or Bydgoszcz. Thanks to the rivers (Warta and the Oder) and their canals it is possible to connect water traffic with industrial cities deep in Germany and the deep-sea ports in Szczecin, Świnoujście and Hamburg. Road and rail border crossings facilitate transportation, bringing economic benefits to the town.

Until the end of the 1980s, Poland “ended” in Kostrzyn. The geopolitical system, including the western border closures, made Kostrzyn a town with an average level of economic development, adequate to the level of contemporary development of the entire country. The political and economic system changed and the opening of borders led to the emergence of huge opportunities for the town. The launch of a railway and road border crossings with Germany in 1992 was of crucial importance. The border in Kostrzyn is crossed by an average of 6 million vehicles and 10 million people a year.
